Interview with a Passionate PA

This interview is the latest in an Accepted blog series featuring  interviews with medical school applicants and students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at  top medical schools and the med school application process. And now, introducing Steph†¦ Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad?   Steph: I am from Michigan originally. I studied at Saint Marys College in Notre Dame, IN and got a BA in Chemistry with a minor in Biology.   Accepted: Can you share 3 fun facts about yourself? Steph:    1. I run a style blog called White Coat Wardrobe. I started it in PA school as a creative outlet and have seen it really grow and blossom since that time!   2. My fiancà © and I are planning to get married in May of this year. 3. I am a Pure Barre ADDICT! Working out has never been something I enjoy, but Pure Barre is my soulmate workout! Accepted: How did you decide to become a PA? Why not a doctor or nurse? Steph: There was never really a question about whether I should become a physician or PA. I had the opportunity to shadow numerous PAs while I was in undergrad and I was magnetized to not only the profession, but the passion and excitement that each mentor seemed to have for what they were doing. I guess you could say that I had professional tunnel vision once I was exposed to what PAs do. I loved that they had autonomy within a practice but still collaborated with physicians on a daily basis. My father is a physician, and he started medical school when I was about 5, so I joke that I already went to medical school once (haha!). Accepted: What are some of the advantages of being a PA? Steph: There are SO many advantages to being a Physician Assistant! The best thing about the profession is that I am trained to be an extension of a physician, providing more access to care. This means that I evaluate the patients, formulate a treatment plan and manage their care. PA programs are structured so that we are trained in the medical model; we take the same series of classes that medical students take, with the exception of a select few. We then go on to have 12-15 months of clinical rotations in every medical specialty. When PAs take their boards, they are then licensed to practice in any medical specialty. Most programs are 24-30 months long, which allows more providers to quickly begin practice, which in turn offsets physician shortages. Since we are trained in every medical specialty, PAs also have the flexibility of changing specialties whenever they choose. For example, I worked in cardiology for my first year of practice and then took a job with an ER group. Our physicians and colleagues help to provide us with on-the-job training that we need to excel in our fields. We also graduate with much lower debt-to-income lifetime ratio than physicians, allowing us to pay off those pesky loans much faster. While I do not have children yet, I love that my job will allow me the flexibility to earn a comfortable income while still having days off to be with my family. Accepted: Where did you study to become a PA? Why did you choose that particular program?   Steph: I studied at the University of Kentucky, and chose that program because I wanted to relocate to a different part of the country and have a new adventure! The staff seemed to be very passionate and invested in training the next generation of PAs, which I was very attracted to.   Accepted: Looking back at the PA school admissions process, what would you say was your greatest challenge? How did you overcome that challenge and how would you advise others who may be facing similar hurdles? Steph: I faced two challenges during my acceptance process. To start, I applied for PA school during my senior year of college and was waitlisted or denied at every school I applied to. Every school had the same piece of feedback: I needed more hands on experience, and shadowing did not count. I took a year off and worked full-time as a CNA at a nursing home and part-time as a pharmacy technician. I reapplied the following year and got interviewed at nearly every school I applied to. My other challenge was more of an administrative one. During my application process, I learned that one of my classes did not meet the prerequisite requirements. I had to send additional paperwork, including a letter from my college professor and an original copy of the course syllabus. I did not get any email or phone conversation from the program when they received the information. Fortunately, I had visited campus twice and had contact information for professors in the program. I sent an email to both of them and they helped me to resolve the issue. Had I not taken the time to visit and make these connections, the issue may have never been resolved and might have cost me an interview date. Always be sure to stay on top of your applications and communications – you are your best advocate! Overall, my advice to PA school applicants would be to apply to a small pool of schools that you are TRULY passionate about attending. Research their prerequisites and make sure that you are a candidate for their program. Make contacts at the school and take time to visit if you can. It can really benefit you during the application process if there is a face attached to a name on a piece of paper. Accepted: Can you tell us about your blog? Who is your target audience? What have you gained from the blogging experience? Steph: My blog is called White Coat Wardrobe. I started it at the end of my didactic year of PA school, right before I started my clinicals. I have always loved clothing and remixing my wardrobe pieces to create new looks. While I followed many bloggers, I felt that there was a huge lack of representation of medical professionals. I set out to show the world that you could have a sense of personal style and still be modest and professional. I was AMAZED at how quickly it grew. Followers really responded to what I was doing, and it provided me with a fun and creative outlet when I needed it the most. The biggest blessing has been the friendships and connections that I have made. I love getting emails from followers asking me advice on the PA school preparation and application process. If nothing else, I hope to be a resource for the next generation of medical professionals! Part One Yup, College Is a Huge Waste of Money.

The average starting salary of Class of 2015 graduates with a bachelor's degree is expected to be just over $62,000, according to a study from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. That might not sound too bad, but consider that the average graduate in 2015 left college with around $35,000 in student loan debt. And with total student loan debt in the U.S. topping $1.2 trillion this year combined with tuition prices that are rising faster than inflation, many families are left wondering whether or not a college education is even worth the cost. What's more, many people feel that you don't even need a degree to achieve success! Here's a great example of someone who gave college a try and wasn't too happy with the results. Perhaps one day having many college degrees will repay me for all the sleepless nights, lack of having a social life, budget meals, and staying up all night to write research papers. Online education has saved me from being destitute. I am a well-educated African American woman in my early forties, and searching for work while in college and thereafter was beyond depressing along with draining. Once I got over myself, and stayed out of my own way while piling up the rejection letters, I figured there had to be more to life than the struggle of juggling recruiters who were intimidated and/or baffled by their famous questions "why aren't you working?" Hmmmï ¿ ½ because NOBODY is willing to give me a chance, even with tons of experience. Between avoiding phone calls from Sallie Mae, debt collectors and my landlord, I moved back in with my mother (that alone was horrific to me - as it made me feel like a complete failure), but thank God I had wifi and a dream, thus turning to the Internet to find my way. I've always been intrigued by small business owners, and with my love of teaching both women and teens entrepreneurship, I was amazed by what you could become within the online market space. Like my parents, most people advise their children to finish high school and get a good city, state or federal government job in order to have security. Sadly, when we don't teach youth and young adults entrepreneurship we do them a disservice by teaching them to play in the sand boxes of life nicely - instead of realizing that life has no limits and truly isn't a box, and thus requires risks and taking responsibility for the way your life turns out. Within a viral world of opportunities that require consistent risks, strategies, drive and commitment to excellence it amazes me that entrepreneurship isn't taught in pre-school. College was a waste of my time for me, especially if obtaining a "Good Job" or a "Great Career" that was supposed to position me to sustain my livelihood because it didn't happen like that for me. There are plenty of people I know with GED's, or even high school dropouts, that are building amazing programs, products and services as the leaders within their niche. Most of these uneducated (as it relates to a college degree) people that have better jobs than those with multiple degrees are doing much better than highly educated, smart, experienced people. Needless to say although I did very well in college, it didn't serve much purpose for me unless of course you want to have a flashy content rich LinkedIn Profile, and that in itself is simply pathetic. RELATED: 7 things you may not know about student loan repayment As a creative visionary, and youth mentor, I will forever teach youth to listen to their parents and attend college, but do what you love on the side, thus making your side hustle your business, so you can eventually fire your boss. We all should have a side hustle whether it is freelance writing, creating crafty items to sell on ESTY, EBay, Amazon, and/or Self Publishing an EBook that teaches to reach others right where they are, and offers you a significantly successful passive income. If had to do it all over again, I would have learned a trade like web design (self-taught) early on so I could have saved time on juggling my struggle of looking for work after graduating with HONORS and G.P.A of 3.8. The best part about not working for someone is there is no cap. As an entrepreneur you're required to wear many hats that will pay you handsomely with, I am not limited by what I can do nor how much money I can make, and even with a college degree their are always some sort of stipulations and/or limits. Objectification of Women by the Media The objectification of women is commonly used to refer to the presentation of women in the media as an object. Womens bodies are routinely used as objects to sell various products. In certain pictures women are presented as being vulnerable and easily overpowered especially in ads were they have on revealing clothing and take on submissive roles. These images are found in music videos as well, where the focus is only a particular body part. Lyrics to some songs promote this objectification as well. In many magazine advertisements women are often viewed as objects rather than human beings. Instead of focusing on the woman as a whole, many ads will just focus on one part of her†¦show more content†¦In one extremely disturbing photograph from Esquire, several (what appear to be) Barbie dolls with broken limbs litter the landscape. Closer inspection, however, reveals them to be women. A male figure in the background is throwing one over his shoulder while he holds another in his hand. The central female has her head severed with her body lying behind it. The title of the article the picture acompanies is 46 Women Who Were Not My Wife which focuses on the authors various affairs. This is the image of intimate sexual relationships? The picture vividly illustrates that those involved are merely objects for the mans sexual pleasure. Music lyrics and videos continually objectify women. Dr. Dre and friends spray champagne on women in Next Episode. In Maxwells video Lets Not Play the Game, Maxwell pauses on womens body parts. In DMXs No Love For Me, footage is shot looking up womens skirts. Sugar Rays Fly video features several shots of various parts of female dancers bodies. In a raft of Rock and Hip Hop videos, women get turned into pieces of booty served up for the pleasure of powerful men.... Animals For Medical Purposes Should Not Remain Legal

Millions of harmless, innocent animals die tragically every year because of painful medical research. Animals including mice, rabbits, monkeys, cats, and dogs undergo painful procedures and medical experiments in order to monitor the devastating effect that takes place on their bodies. As the animals wait in their cold, boring, isolated cages, they do not receive the chance to roam around or use their natural abilities. Before their soon, unavoidable death, some animals are injected with harmful toxins, have holes drilled in their skulls, inhale toxic vapors, and have all their skin burned off. The animal’s moral rights never become apparent and the creatures are taken away to be tortured until death remains unpreventable. The right for experimenters to test and kill animals for medical purposes should not remain legal. The use of animals for biomedical research dates back to the third and fourth centuries BCE. Recently, the severe treatment of animals sparked a growing controversy by animal lovers and protectors everywhere. A well-known organization known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal (PETA) strikes back against medical research on animals and holds strong to its belief that this research is inhumane and should seize immediately. Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney), a suave, fast-taking convict, escapes from incarceration in Mississippi during the Great Depression. He is chained to two other prisoners, slow-witted Delmar (Tim Blake Neslon) and hot-tempered Pete (John Turturro), so the three must escape together. Everett convinces them that he has hidden $1.2 million after robbing an armored car, and promises to split it with them. They hitch a ride with an elderly blind man on a railway handcar, and he foretells that they will indeed find a treasure, though it may not be the one they seek. They travel on foot to visit Petes cousin, Washington Hogwallop, who removes their shackles and allows them to sleep in his barn. Thinking that their box contains money, Big Dan lures them to a field for an advanced tutorial on salesmanship. He violently beats the two men, kills the toad after finding no cash, and steals their car. Everett and Delmar arrive at Everetts hometown, where he attempts to speak to his wife, Penny (Holly Hunter), mother of his seven daughters. He finds that Penny is engaged to Vernon T.
